Saw it. Pinned it. Did it. - DIY Photo Coasters

Hey friends! Happy November!!

Welcome to week 2 of Saw it. Pinned it. Did it hosted by yours truly and Katie @ Keep Calm & Carry On! I'd be lying if I said I haven't been looking forward to today ALL week long! (Really!)

So here is the original pin I wanted to "re-create"...

SIIIIIKE.

Y'all...

A) I don't even have a dog and B) I am not with child and therefore this pin would have been highly impossible for me to create on my own. One day, though...one day... ;)

Alas, I stuck with something I knew I could pull off...DIY Photo Coasters. (I know...not as cool as a baby but it'll do, right?)

Original pin:

So here's what you'll need:
Mod podge
Skissors (pink ones, preferably)
Sanding block or paper
Corkboard coasters (I got mine at the Hob Lob)
Sponge brush
Pen
6 of your favorite pictures (4x6)
Matte clear spray paint (not pictured)
Disclaimer: ridiculously good-looking husband & incredibly talented photographer not included.

How to do it:

1. Trace your coasters on the back of each photo. Make sure it's centered properly so no one ends up headless on the front of your coaster!

2. Cut out each photo following the lines you traced.

3. Apply a coat of Mod Podge to one side of your coasters.

4. Press the photos on top. Smooth out to ensure you have no air bubbles and let dry.

5. Once photos are secured to the coasters, apply a thin coat of mod podge to the top of the photos going one direction. (Don't forget to cover the edges to make sure your photos don't lift off the coaster!)

6. Once the first coat is dry, paint a second layer of mod podge, going the opposite direction. (First time paint horizontal, second time paint vertical.)

7. After both coats have dried, use your sanding stone or paper to sand down any of the photos that might be hanging over the edges. (I ended up not using mine because I tried to cut them as close to the edge as possible but I can definitely see where someone might need a sanding stone for the edges.)

8. Seal your photos with your matte clear spray paint, pour yourself a vodka sodie & enjoy your newfound custom coasters!

If you don't want to use pictures, you can always use cute scrapbook paper or even a monogram and make festive coasters for just about every holiday possible! I'm thinking these are going to make precious little gifties for all my girlfriends...yes?!

**We only ask that you credit the original source of your pin and that you include our button (below) and link back to our blogs somewhere on your post. To do this-just copy the code in the little box below and paste it in your HTML at the bottom of your post. Please, please do this so we can follow along and others can join the fun, too!

  5. I'd be lying if I said the vodka sodie wasn't making my mouth water right now.
I'd also be lying if I said I wouldn't use these pretties in my own house. Stop being such a damn good looking, model couple.

  21. These are awesome! I must ask though - since its cork board behind the photos are they VERY light? We have found that sometimes our lighter coasters stick to glasses (if the glasses sweat) Have you noticed this happening at all?? :-)

    I love love this idea!

  24. I love these coasters! I didn't have a brand new Pinterest project but, I linked-up one that I did... & it seems we were on the same wave length today! I did coasters too! But, mine are tile & no picture - just a monogram! Yours turned out SUPER cute though & I really want to try this with our engagement pictures! Plus, I wonder if the cork board is easier than the tiles I used! Hmm... I'll have to try this way too! They look great by the way!!!

  26. These are so cute! I actually don't have any coasters yet so I seriously may give this a try soon!

I saw that you got the coasters at Hobby Lobby..can you believe I live right outside of Seattle and the nearest Hobby Lobby is like 3 1/2 hours away!!!!!! How ridiculous is that? What kind of city does Seattle think it is anyways? Sheesh. The nerve.

  30. I did a tutorial on these that I made for Christmas last year, too! I love that you used cork coasters though. I wish I would have known about those, I used tiles and added felt to the back. The only downfall is that they are super heavy so the cork ones would have been great :) Yours look awesome!

  39. Love the new blog design! And I've had coasters on my "to make" list for two years. I need to get my act together.

My "to make" list actually ONLY has coasters on it, because I'm not crafty. But I really should do them since the materials I need have been sitting in my closet that long...

  46. Awesome idea and well done on the coasters - they look stunning!!
The DIY in SA isn't that great because a lot of the materials aren't as readily available (even simple things like mode podge and wooden coasters are hard to find!!)
